At a glance: Jackson Pollock's "Male and Female"

Writer's picture: Max IsaacsMax Isaacs

“Male and Female”, Jackson Pollock, Oil on Canvas, 1942-1943, Philadelphia Museum of Art,

At first glance of viewing this artwork the color, contrast and symbolic representation caught my attention immediately. Though it did take me a moment to see that the title of Pollock’s work wasn't misleading, in fact there is a woman and man standing there. As the female figure has female attributes, (curvy hips, busty ect) and the male is depicted with typical male attributes (straight, flat ect). Also, from first impressions it reminded me of Jean-Michel Basquiat’s art works, though I do understand the movements that Pollock’s work is classified as is different from how Basquiat’s work is classified. Through the pattern of paint strokes and colors just made me make that connection.
